The tour started with a stop at the Leola Produce Auction.\u00c2\u00a0 This co-op auction provides Lancaster County farmers, mostly Amish and Mennonite, with a marketing opportunity to sell produce and plants\u00c2\u00a0to buyers from New York, Boston, Philidelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.\u00c2\u00a0 The first\u00c2\u00a0auction occured\u00c2\u00a020\u00c2\u00a0years ago under the visionary leadership of the Nolt family. Today it involves over 3,000\u00c2\u00a0farmers who sell over\u00c2\u00a0five and one-half\u00c2\u00a0million dollars\u00c2\u00a0of produce annually. The group got to see produce, including pumpkins, califlower, cabbage, and\u00c2\u00a0other late season produce,\u00c2\u00a0being brought to the auction in horse drawn wagons.\u00c2\u00a0 The highlight was seeing\u00c2\u00a0a\u00c2\u00a0pumpkin that weighed over 700 pounds (see photo).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.namablog.org\/images\/chesapeake1.jpg\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"5\" \/>The next stop was lunch at Yoder&#8217;s Family Restaurant.\u00c2\u00a0 The group was treated to an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch meal served family style with everything from ham loaf and fried chicken to &#8220;Shoo-Fly&#8221; pie and home made ice cream.\u00c2\u00a0 No one left hungry.<\/p>\n<p>The tour concluded with a visit to the Case New Holland (CNH) farm equipment manufacturing plant in New Holland, PA.\u00c2\u00a0 Members and guests learned of the heritage of CNH from it&#8217;s begining with a single product, a windmill powered grinder. Today, CNH is a major force in agriculture production with full lines of tractors, tillage and harvesting equipment.
